What are Rhyming Words?

New to phonics instruction? Start here! If you are already familiar with rhyming words, scroll to the bottom to download your free PDF of these worksheets.

Rhyming words are words that have the same sound at the end of the words. Even though they have the same sound, they do not need to have the same ending spellings.

For children just beginning to work on rhyming words, it can be helpful to start with word families and words that do have the same spellings.

Once children understand the concept, you can begin to introduce words that have different spellings.

Practicing Rhyming Words

It can be helpful to read aloud a favorite rhyming book with your children. Have students raise their hand or make another motion when they hear the rhyming words.

You can make a chart of the rhyming words so students can begin to recognize the patterns.

Encourage children to make their own lists when they read to practice on their own.

About These Rhyming Words Worksheets

This set contains 26 printable pages where students will work with rhyming words. Students will complete words and color pictures while practicing reading the words.

These pages might fit into your first or second grade word work practice.

These pages are not intended for teaching the skill but for practice and review of rhyming words.

You will find a range of worksheets for phonics practice.

These pages might offer a challenge to students just beginning to read. If your students are not yet ready for working with rhyming words, begin with short vowel sounds or magic e words.

When creating these pages, my goal was to provide you with pages that will engage students. Many of the pages include mazes or other small activities to add a little fun for children.

The engagement piece can be especially helpful during a time of distance learning! Parents will appreciate the little extra these pages provide.
