These reading mazes: diphthong paths will be a fun addition to your word work and phonics resources for practicing words containing diphthongs.
I’m receiving many requests for more phonics mazes – I will continue working on adding new sets.
Children think of mazes as a type of game so adding a maze to your word work can make it seem like more fun than work!
This specific set of phonics mazes focuses on words containing diphthongs.
Diphthongs can be tricky. They are two letters that work together to glide from one sound to another. They are not the same as long vowel sounds because while the letters do not make a short vowel sound, the sound they make is different than the name of each vowel.
The word diphthong is a Greek word that actually means two voices or two sounds.
The diphthongs are ew, oi, oo, ou, ow, oy, au and aw.
There are a total of 8 pages for students to use when practicing their phonics skills.
Along with the directions identifying the diphthong each page focuses on, you will also find a picture clue that begins with the diphthong.
To complete the task, students will start at the top picture and color the first square. Children will then find the path by coloring the noted diphthong words. Their goal is to reach the picture at the end of the maze.
Students simply need a crayon, colored pencil or marker to play.
