I’m receiving many requests for more phonics mazes – I will continue working on adding new sets.

Children think of mazes as a type of game so adding a maze to your word work can make it seem like more fun than work!

This specific set of phonics mazes focuses on beginning blends words.

What are Blends?

Unsure of what Blends are? Start here! (If you already know, skip to the end for your free download.)

Beginning blends are sounds that “blend” together to form a sound although children are able to stretch out the sound to hear both letters. You might also hear these letter combinations referred to as consonant clusters.

For these pages, I focused on blends for L, R and S. Each blend found in these pages has two letters.

These are good words to work on after CVC or short vowel words. Like CVC words, CVCe words have many words with pictures to accompany the word. This can be good for students needing to match meaning with the letters in order to begin reading words.

About these Reading Mazes: Beginning Blend Paths

There are a total of 19 pages for students to use when practicing their phonics skills.

Along with the directions identifying the blend each page focuses on, you will also find a picture clue that begins with the blend.

To complete the task, students will start at the top picture and color the first square. Children will then find the path by coloring the noted blend words. Their goal is to reach the picture at the end of the maze.

Students simply need a crayon, colored pencil or marker to play.
