Landforms syllable sort

This sort contains a range of words for students to practice with.

To use in my sixth-grade classroom, I removed all but a couple of the one and two syllable words. I kept in the three syllable words that students might not be confident in spelling. I found that there were a few of the larger words students did not know.

When it came to counting syllables, some students needed help remembering how to determine the syllables and then could work through the task.

Because this was intended to be a review skill for my students, I came around and checked student work. If I could tell students did not understand, I took notes so that I could come back to this during a small group.

Some of the words that offered a challenge for many students were:

archipelago, biodiversity, cartographer, deforestation, and mountainous.

Many of these words gave us the opportunity for a quick word parts review or a vocabulary lesson.

Creating your resource

I like to print my sorts on colored card stock. I try and print one set on a color and then when they get mixed up, it is easier to sort.

After printing, laminate, and cut apart the cards.

I store mine in containers so students can grab one and get to work.
