This is another free resource for teachers and homeschool families from www.freewordwork.com.

What are ending blends?

This flashcard set can be a great resource for teaching ending blends in first and second grades.

Ending blends are sounds that “blend” together to form a sound although children are able to stretch out the sound to hear both letters. You might also hear these letter combinations referred to as consonant clusters.

The blends focused on in these flashcards are found at the end of the words.

Using these ending blend flashcards

You will find these ending blend flashcards in four formats.

The download includes:

  • each ending blend on a card
  • a picture for each ending blend on a card
  • an ending blend next to a picture on a card
  • a word containing the ending blend on a card

Some ideas for using these cards include:

Begin with the cards containing the ending blend and picture on one card. Continue by saying the name of the picture and then saying the ending blend sound.

Have your child name the picture on the card. They can then identify the ending blend they hear at the beginning. You might then have your child write the letters on a whiteboard so that they are matching the letters with the sound.

Once your child has mastered this task, they can try reading the ending blend without the picture clues. You might ask them to make a list of words they know beginning with the ending blends.

These cards can also be used as a matching activity. Have your child match the ending blend letters with the picture. Extend the activity by playing a go fish style game or a memory game with these cards.

  • Please consider changing some of your ending blend cards. -rf, -rk, -rl, etc... are not ending blends. The -ar in scarf, the -ar in shark and the -ir in girl are r controlled vowels. The r is not part of an ending blend. It is very important that we designate these for our early learners.
    Thank you!
