This is another free resource for teachers and homeschool families from www.freewordwork.com.

This set of Elkonin Boxes: CVC Worksheets can be used to help your students practice consonant, vowel, consonant words.

These will be helpful for students beginning to read.

What are Elkonin Boxes?

Elkonin boxes are also called sound boxes.

These are used for students to practice phonological awareness.

Children will segment words into individual sounds or phonemes.

They are typically used in small groups or with individual practice with a student. Students will say a sound and move a token for each sound they hear.

I have adapted the concept to create these worksheets. Students will simply record each sound they hear in the boxes on these pages.

These boxes can be helpful for children learning to listen for each sound they hear. CVC words are easy to start with because each sound can be heard when the word is stretched out.

Using these Elkonin Boxes CVC Worksheets

These are designed to be simple paper and pencil tasks.

Students will look at each picture, say the word and record each sound they hear.

You will see that there could be more than one correct answer for a few pictures.

For example, students might write dog or pup. There might be some debate as to putting cup or mug in spots. Dip is also one of the words but it would be possible some children put chip. They would put ch in the first box, i and then p.

It does not matter which word students choose to name the picture. Instead, the goal is for students to practice stretching out each word and recording the sounds heard.

Allow students to use colored pencils or colorful markers to add a little fun to the worksheets. Coloring the pictures during work completion can also help students work on fine motor skills.

Notes about these pages

There are 10 pages in all.

The first five each focus on a single vowel. So you will find one page with a, one with e, one with i, one with o and one with u.

The remaining pages have a mixture of vowels.
