Diphthongs are a phonics skill students can work on after they have mastered single letter sounds.
They are two letters that work together to glide from one sound to another. They are not the same as long vowel sounds because while the letters do not make a short vowel sound, the sound they make is different than the name of each vowel.
The word diphthong is a Greek word that actually means two voices or two sounds.
The diphthongs are ew, oi, oo, ou, ow, oy, au and aw.
Diphthongs can be a challenge for reading and writing because students will be working on new sounds. These words to not allow children to simply sound out words as they have done when they began reading.
For these words, encourage students to focus on the patterns they see. Word sorts could be good practice or have your children search for words containing diphthongs in their reading.
The more exposure students have to these words, the better!
This set contains 24 pages where students will work on completing words containing diphthongs.
These pages might fit into your first grade, second or even third grade word work practice.
There are a range of pages for different levels of need. Some require students to cut and paste the vowel teams only. Others will have students cut and paste the whole word or a picture.
As always, you will want to choose the just right pages for your students. You want to provide work that makes your students think without causing frustration.
