What are blends?
Unsure of what Blends are? Start here! (If you already know, skip to the end for your free download.)
Beginning blends are sounds that “blend” together to form a sound although children are able to stretch out the sound to hear both letters. You might also hear these letter combinations referred to as consonant clusters.
For these flashcards, I focused on blends for L, R and S. Each blend found in these pages has two letters.
Using these beginning blend flashcards
You will find these beginning blend flashcards in three formats.
The download includes:
- each blend on a card
- a picture for each blend on a card
- a blend next to a picture on a card
- cards containing each word
Some ideas for using these cards include:
Begin with the cards containing the blend and picture on one card. Continue by saying the name of the picture and then saying the blend sound.
Have your child name the picture on the card. They can then identify the blend they hear at the beginning. You might then have your child write the letters on a whiteboard so that they are matching the letters with the sound.
Once your child has mastered this task, they can try reading the blend without the picture clues. You might ask them to make a list of words they know beginning with the blend.
These cards can also be used as a matching activity. Have your child match the blend letters with the picture. Extend the activity by playing a go fish style game or a memory game with these cards.
