Make learning letter sounds fun!

As you work on letter sounds in the classroom, it is important for you to work to include interactive activities that include movement whenever possible.

Young students learn best when they are up and moving – not simply sitting and being talked to. (Of course, this can be true for all ages, not just our youngest learners!)

Do you have great ways you include movement as students work on letters?

One idea is to have students go on a scavenger hunt in the classroom. Challenge them to find objects that begin with the letter you are focusing on. They might also find printed words around the room.

This alphabet sounds hunt

This activity is designed to help students practice beginning letter sounds.

For each letter you will find a printable recording page for children.

There is also a page of 8 cards. These cards contain some pictures with the focus letter sounds and then an assortment of other pictures.

Each page of cards is labeled in the bottom right of the cards with the focus letter for the page. This will help make sorting easier if the cards get mixed up.

You will print the cards on card stock, laminate and cut apart the cards.

Post the cards around the room.

Students can be give by coloring in and tracing the focus letter on the page. You might also have them color in the letter on the border.

Next, they will find card number one. When they find the card, they will say the word for the pictu.

If the word starts with the focus letter, they will color the smiley face. If the word does not start with the focus letter, they will color the frowny face.
