I have heard more debates recently about if we should be working on sight words with children.
I believe that working on sight words is an important piece of instruction for some children. It feels like so often we as teachers go all in on one strategy when new research comes out.
I have seen so many children thrive with intense sight word instruction. If some children learn best this way, it seems important to keep providing it as an option.
Your whole day of reading should not be sight word instruction. However, it can be one strategy you use to help your readers grow.
This download contains 20 pages. Each page has a grouping of 5 words from the second hundred list of Fry Words.
Before a child begins working, go over the five words with the student. You want to make sure they are reading the word to themselves as they work through the task.
To complete a page, children will search for each word and color in a bar on the bar graph. You might want to encourage children to cross off each word as they color.
I hope this provides engaging reading practice for your students!
